The short answer

Robotics, SLAM, autonomous vehicles: Livox MID-360 S — 360° all-around view, integrated IMU, ROS2 driver, best price.
Drones / UAV surveying and range: Livox Avia — up to 450 m at 498 g.
Very long distances (rail, perimeter, surveying): Livox Tele-15 — up to 500 m, <0.03° angular accuracy.
Maximum point density in a hemisphere: Hesai JT128 — 128 channels, 360°×187°, up to 1.15 million points/s.

The decision in detail

MID-360 S — the robotics standard

No other sensor in this price class delivers a complete 360° all-around view with an integrated IMU. The official ROS2 driver (livox_ros_driver2) and direct support in SLAM frameworks such as FAST-LIO have made the MID-360 the de-facto standard in the robotics community. With a 0.1 m minimum distance it also covers close range — important for navigation in tight spaces.

Avia — range per gram

190 m range at 10% reflectivity and under 500 g: the Avia is built for UAV mapping. The triple-echo mode (720,000 points/s) penetrates vegetation — relevant for terrain and forestry surveying.

Tele-15 — the telephoto lens among LiDARs

Narrow field of view, but 500 m range and <0.03° angular accuracy: for rail applications, perimeters and anywhere a narrow corridor must be monitored over long distances. Current lead time approx. 14 days.

Hesai JT128 — the point-density reference

128 channels and a hemispherical 360°×187° field of view: the JT128 sees everything above and around it — with the highest point rate in this comparison. The choice when a single compact sensor (250 g) must densely capture a complete hemisphere.
